Book Club | Esperanza Rising

Sometimes it feels like all I ever post is book club, but that's because I love it and always take my good camera along to document it. This month we had an especially great time because there was a craft and make-your-own tortillas at the park!

Our book was Esperanza Rising, a story based on the author's grandmother coming to California from Mexico during the Great Depression. It even mentioned some places our children were very familiar with, like Bakersfield and Highway 99. We started the morning with book discussion.

I brought this afghan I crocheted Isaac before we were married, because the pattern is the one that Esperanza learns in the books and is imagery of the mountains/highs and valleys/lows of her life.

After book discussion, we had some sweeping contests because Esperanza, who was the privileged daughter of a ranch owner in Mexico, learns to sweep after coming to California and living in a labor camp.

Next, the kids learned to make yarn dolls, like Mama makes in the book.

While doll-making continued, the kids were called over in smaller groups to roll our their tortillas.

We'd all helped to bring lunch: rice, beans, the tortillas, fruits, salsa, enchiladas, and jamaica (hibiscus) punch. It was quite a feast!

It was Erin's birthday that day, so we celebrated with a candle in the Mexican sweet bread!

This book club was hosted by Jenyfer and we all had a great time. The yard dolls were particularly popular with some of the girls who made many more over the following couple of days.

It was my turn to pick a book next and, trying to pick something I wouldn't normally choose, I decided on The Thirteen Clocks. I did a really great job picking something I wouldn't normally read, maybe too good a job, since I didn't really like the book and now I need to figure out what we're going to do at book club next month!
